LIES, DAMNED LIES AND STATISTICS

According to Mark Twain, who credited Benjamin Disraeli with the quote, There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned lies and statistics. The phrase is often used to describe the persuasive power of statistics to bolster a weak argument. I would also suggest however it separates the honourable from the shameful but more of this later. It’s February 2024, the weather has fared no better since I last blogged. Various combinations of regulars have ventured out onto the local courses and games have varied in length from 8 to 18 holes.   Only recently, due to inclement weather, seven us headed off to ‘One Stop Golf’ and the Top Tracer experience. I know it will come as a shock to my reader but it’s been over two months since I last blogged. What will the golfing officianados of Hull and the East Riding think? Has the Wormburner hunkered down over the winter months refusing to put finger to keyboard? Has he finally cracked and snapped every club in his bag? Or, God forbid, has he given up the game? None of these, the answer is simple, nothing to report. Nope, sweet f a, diddly squat, bugger all! Yet, if I look deeply into the mists of time, a few interesting snippets raise their ugly heads. The close season has seen the great and the good suffer from debilitating injuries. The Doc returning from a little winter sun on the Portuguese island of Madeira suffered a devastating back injury and is now only just competing after a long layoff. The Metronome suffering from a self-inflicted hand injury, instantly visited Doctor Google and laid himself off for several weeks. As ever he was philosophical in his approach and was ...
